Museo Enzo Ferrari
A case-study of the evolution of exhibition design in contemporary architecture.
The Museo Enzo Ferrari is a contemporary museum in Modena which celebrates the great master Enzo Ferrari and one of the most recognisable car brands and manufacturers in the world. The intervention for the new museum, by Jan Kaplicky’s studio Future Systems, includes the construction ‘ex novo’ (from scratch) of a contemporary architecture and the restoration of an existing one. The contemporary museum generated by Kaplicky’s futuristic vision of architecture is a huge sinuous hangar, dominated by a yellow seemingly joint-less roof. The technologies used in the construction of the roof, and of some parts of the structure of the building, as well as the aesthetics and concept of the whole project, are in-fact taken from those used in vehicle engineering. The building temperature is regulated by a free cooling system, and by a sophisticated shading system on the main facade, the huge ‘curtain wall’.
- You will learn to analyze the composition and construction of the supporting structure of the proposed architecture and identify the solutions adopted to balance the forces and the loads in relation to the particular shape of the building; in addition, you will be able to describe the particular technologies involved in the construction of the joint-less roof.
- After the course, you will be able to argue the pros and cons of the Italian debate on building restoration and renovation, particularly relating to the renovation and structural improvement of the pre-existing building within the project site.
- You will be able to explain the process of “free-cooling” of the building, focusing on the efficiency of the air circulation system; the course will also analyze the functioning of the facades as osmotic barriers and solar screens.
- After the course, you will be able to discuss the reasons behind the particular choice of interior design style of the building.
